Biography

Ezra was born^[1],^[2] 7 Apr 1791 Strafford, Orange County, Vermont. He is the son of Ezra Gilbert and Huldah Warner.

SPOUSES

1.) Ezra had two sons born within the time frame of Hiram's birth (1819), and their mother was born between 1795 and 1800, possibly coming with Ezra from Vermont, and died in the 1840s.

In the 1880 census for Cuivre, Missouri, Hiram indicates both of his parents were born in Vermont.

Ezra Gilbert is the only Gilbert from Vermont I have found living in southeastern Indiana around the time of Hiram's birth.

Indiana probate records indicate Ezra had a son named "Hyram".

The 1820 census of Jefferson, Indiana, reports Ezra living with a wife born between 1795 and 1805 with two sons and a daughter born between 1810 and 1820.

The 1830 and 1840 census reports Ezra's wife born between 1790 and 1800.

The 1850 census reports his wife as Sarah Robins, who he married in 1849.

I interpret these records as indicating Ezra had two sons born within the time frame of Hiram's birth, and their mother was born between 1795 and 1800, possibly coming with Ezra from Vermont, and died in the 1840s.

My interest in Hiram arises from DNA testing. Although I have not established a shared ancestor, I have a group of 49 DNA matches sharing up to 47 cM with me, and I have traced 8 of those matches back to Hiram Gilbert or his brother Eber, born in 1817 (Ezra Gilbert's son) .
