Susara Margaretha lost her father Johan Andries Gerber and mother Maria Magdalena Ferreira when she was only 5 and 8 years of age respectively. Being a rather big family, the older brothers looked after themselves while the sisters were placed with uncles/aunts. Susara Margaretha Gerber herself was raised by her mother's brother Petrus Hendrik Ferreira and his wife Magdalena Josina Olivier at Fisantkraal, Opkomst. She was only allowed to attend school until she finished Std 6. The following years she spent helping in the household. From here she married Daniël Jacobus Ferreira.
