Biography

William Garrigus was a Missourian.
This profile is part of the Garrigues Name Study.
William Garrigus is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.

William was born about 1858 in Missouri, to Mathias and Sylva Garrigus. Some online researchers have cited the date March 24, 1858, but I don't have an official source for this. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

William was enumerated for the federal census on June 21, 1860. He was about 2 years old at the time, and was living with parents Mathias and Sylva, and grandfather Mathias Garrigus, in Robberson Township, Greene County, Missouri (Hickory Barren post office). [1]

William was enumerated for the federal census on August 4, 1870. He was about 12 years old at the time, and was living with step-father George Johnston, mother Sylva, and brothers Jesse, James, and Thomas, in Lebanon Township, Laclede County, Missouri. He worked as a farm laborer. [2]

On December 28, 1879, William was married to Josephine Williams in Laclede County, Missouri. [6]

William was enumerated for the federal census on June 14, 1880. He was about 22 years old at the time, and was living with wife Josephine in Union Township, Laclede County, Missouri. He worked as a farmer. [3]

William was enumerated for the federal census on June 23, 1900. He was about 42 years old at the time, and was living with mother Sylva Johnston, wife Josephine, and children Ella and Ivy, in Jasper Township, Dallas County, Missouri. He worked as a farmer, and was noted to be able to read and write. [4]

William was enumerated for the federal census between May 4 and 6, 1910. He was about 52 years old at the time, and was living with wife Josephine in Jasper Township, Dallas County, Missouri. He worked as a farmer. [5]

The last definitive record I have for William is a 1917 newspaper article noting that he was "on the sick list." Some online researchers cite 1924 as his death, but I have yet to find a record confirming it.* I have not found him on the 1920 census either. By the 1930 census, his wife is recorded as widowed. [7] [8]

Numerous members of the extended Garrigus/Gargus family from the Laclede County, Missouri, area, are missing death and burial records, including William himself. The Laclede County courthouse was destroyed by a fire in 1920, along with many records, and as yet I have been unable to locate burial locations for many members of this family. Numerous cemeteries in the area are also reported to have been destroyed by agriculture. It's possible some of these records may be lost forever.* [9]
