Biography

Samuel Freeman immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Samuel Freeman was born on 11 March 1638 in Watertown, Masssachusetts Bay Colony, the son of Samuel and Apphia (Quick) Freeman.[1]

His parents had emigrated to New England in 1630 and were amongst the first settlers in Watertown. His father traveled several times between New England and England "by 1637".[2] On 11 Feb 1630/1 "Mr Freeman's house at Watertown was burned down, but, being in the daytime, his goods were saved" [WJ 1:49] [2] On one of his return trips to England Samuel Freeman, Sr. "had been imprisoned in London as a result of one of the family's many lawsuits, and in 1636 he was still in England."[3][2]

About age 6 years his parents ended their twenty year marriage "in divorce about 1644,"[2] at which time his mother Apphia (Quick) Freeman married Thomas Prence.[4] Samuel's step-father, Thomas Pence was one of the founders of Eastham, Plymouth Colony, and held the Governor's office several times.

Samuel married Mercy Southworth on 12 May 1658 at Eastham.[5][6] She was the daughter of Constant and Elizabeth (Collier) Southworth. Constant was sometime assistant in the Plymouth Colony and had emigrated 1622 from Leiden, Zuid-Holland Province, Netherlands with his widowed mother Alice (Carpenter) Southworth and brother Thomas. Constant Southworth's mother Alice soon after married Governor William Bradford of Plymouth Colony.

This profile could really use a good bio written for one of the early settlers on the Cape. Any of the PMs want to take a wack at it?

Bobbie, this profile is a direct ancestor (not that that means anything to anybody but it does mean I have a personal interest in 'getting it right'). Would you mind if I 'gave it a wack'? Leigh Anne
Absolutely Leigh Anne, none of the PMs have made recent changes, and it could use some good sources. Have at it.
