Simmie was a Bootlegger & Moonshiner in Appalachia.
Simmie Free was an American Southern Appalachian Moonshiner born January 14, 1892
He got his start by dropping out of school after the second grade in order to help his father produce “corn likker”. Moonshining was one of the few ways people in Appalachian regions who didn’t live near timberlands or coal mines had to make a living.
At the apex of his career he was one of the top producers and distributors in Georgia. He was sentenced to jail at least four times for his activities.
Simmie passed away in Tiger, Rabun County, Georgia on May 26, 1980.
