Biography

I'm a native of Richmond, VA. I have a particular interest in my dad's direct male line because there in lies our brickwall, the Fortunes of old town Manchester, Richmond, VA. We cannot trace them on paper before 1847. The name might have once been McFortune(pronounced Mac) based on information found in a certificate of death, an interment record, and an obituary. The use of Mc, said "Mac", may have been cultural.

I have accurate records and sourcing going back to my 3G Grandparents, William Macklin Fortune and his wife Margaret Bowen [or Bowman]. We are actively looking for his parents. We know Margaret's mother was Nancy Bowen/Bowman but haven't confirmed Nancy's maiden name via solid sourcing (this is pending updates - DNA confirms Drumheller as father of Nancy Bowen).

I am looking to start a Fortune YDNA project tag at wikitree where fellow Fortune researchers can compare ydna results, anonymized if necessary to comply with privacy guidelines.

My research has revealed at least 7 ydna Fortune lines:

  • This information is slightly stale. Please see the Fortune surname project: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Fortune_Name_Study
  • C-P39 - Four men who trace to the Fortune family of Nelson county. C-P39 is a native american ydna haplogroup. I don't match them.
  • R-M269(mine) - Consists of two ydna tested men - one descended from Jeremiah FOrtune and one from his brother John. Both of us match which means we have the ydna haplogroup for their father, William Macklin Fortune. I match the Walden Ravensworth ydna haplogroup. However, I match none of these men in a cousin test and don't match the descendants of their MDKA.
  • R-M269(D. Fortune, deceased) - The family has traced to Nicholas Hamner Fortune. I don't match him. His daughter saw her dad's ydna results at ancestry and he didn't match any other Fortunes.
  • R-M269(SC Fortunes) - Fortune family in SC from the 1700s. Well represented on Fortune ydna project at FTDNA. I do not match them.
  • R-M269(NC Fortunes - no details). The person who tested did so at ancestry before ancestry took down the ydna database. I only know the person traced lineage to William Fortune (1756-1833) of NC. This is the William Fortune (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fortune-261) who traces to the Nelson County Fortunes. He did not match D. Fortune, so they do not belong to the same R-M269 subgroup. I do not now how many many markers or if the individual matched other Fortune men or not.
  • R-M269 (Ohio Fortunes) - I have had very little contact with them, but their ydna haplogroup is a different group. I did do atDNA compares with their assistance but there were no matches.
  • R-M269 (R-BY164620) - See FTDNA for name. The MDKA is from Scotland. I do not match ydna or atDNA.

Sources

  • First-hand information. Entered by John Fortune at registration.
  • atDNA testing confirms that all four of my grandparents (Fortune, Randall, Craig, and Sprouse) match large clusters of those respective families.
  • yDNA information gleaned from Fortune Surname Project at FTDNA.
  • D. Fortune yDNA results shared and obtained from his daughter. Her father is deceased.
  • Potential yDNA descendant of William Fortune (1756-1833) referenced on Gedmatch in 2018. Only the haplogroup R-M269 was listed, no further details. I have no contact information.

Hi, John,

This is a courtesy e-mail to see how things are going. Are you enjoying WikiTree so far?

Have the tips in the New Member How-Tos been helpful? Most of us still have some questions after reviewing them.

I'm here to help with issues and questions about how WikiTree works. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page or send a private message.

Deb ~ WikiGreeter

PS If you get a "Page Not Found" error when clicking WikiTree email links, you can often find a working version in the public comments on your profile.

PPS Did you discover that the tags on your profile are clickable links to a page of other people who have that tag?

Hi John,

Because of the way the messaging service works at WikiTree, we don't get notified about comments you put on your own profile. A greeter might notice it while doing various tasks like I did but there is no guarantee. That's why we recommend posting on other profiles or in the G2G forum.

Probably the best way to find suggestions for your ydna project is to create a new G2G post to introduce yourself and explain what you are planning. Down at the bottom where it says "Surnames and project tags," add tags for DNA, y-dna, Mentor, and Fortune to catch the attention of people who specialize in those topics.

I am looking to start a Fortune_ydna project here at wikitree. Any help and suggestions are welcome. I'd like to show a list of ydna tested men, as well as Fortune families from which ydna tests and additional dna testing would help resolve ancestry.
