Biography

Abigail Ford was born on April 25, 1727 [1]in Pembroke, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony. She was the daughter of John Ford and Mary Cushing Ford.

Abigail Foard (sic) of Pembroke and Ichabod Richmond of Dartmouth had intention to marry recorded in Pembroke on July 30, 1757, [2]

Abigail Ford and Ichabod Richmond were married on September 1, 1757 in Penbroke. [3]

Ichabod and Abigail had one son, Nathaniel, who was born on August 16, 1761 in Bristol, Bristol County, Colony of Rhode Island. [4]

Ichabod signed a will on April 3, 1762 in Bristol. [5] He left Abigail all of the goods & household furniture of every kind that she brought to the marriage. She was also to have use of all his property both real and personal "for her comfortable support" and for use in bringing up and education of their son Nathaniel until he reached twenty-one years old. She was then to have one-third of the real estate for the remainder of her life. The property was mentioned in Bristol, Little Compton, Dartmouth, "or elsewhere." When Nathanial became twenty-one he was to have two-thirds of the estate. If Nathaniel died before he was twenty-one without children Abigail was to have the entire estate. Abigail was to be the executor of the will.

Ichabod died on September 29, 1762 [6] and was buried at the East Burial Ground in Bristol, Rhode Island. Ichabod's will was recorded on November 1, 1762 [5]

Abigail and Benjamin Cushing were married by Reverend John Burt on September 11, 1765 in Providence, Rhode Island.[7] They had both been married previously and had children.

Abigail and Benjamin had two children. Nathanial was born on June 21, 1766 and Abigail was born on January 3, 1769.

Benjamin died on February 24, 1785. Abigail died on August 27, 1789 at the age of sixty-three[8] [1] The mortuary notice that appeared in the United States Chronicle newspaper in Providence. It stated that she died, "after a langishing illness" and offered many praises and stated that she "She expired in Perfect peace, resulting from her faith in Jesus, a life of Sanctity and a Prospect of Felicity to come."[9]

She was buried on August 30, 1789[9] at the North Burial Ground in Providence, Rhode Island. [8] [1] Her headstone says,
Sacred to the Memory of
Mrs. ABIGAIL CUSHING
widow of the late
Benjamin Cushing Esq. deceased,
who died August 27th, 1789,
in the 63d year
