Biography

Gus was born 12 Mar 1925 in Bailey, Nash County, North Carolina, USA to Durward and Julia (Whitley) Finch.

Her father died when she was two. Three years later her mother remarried. Gus's step-father was a farmer.

Like her sisters Rachel and Eris, Gus was the valedictorian of her high school class.

During World War II she moved to Portsmouth, Virginia, where she worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. There she met and married, John George, who was an electrician. After the war John attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, going to work for General Electric as an electrical engineer after graduation.

In 1953 Gus and John moved to Rome, Georgia, where she worked as a secretary. She worked for several employers, including the First Christian Church, Celenese, Darlington School, and the City of Rome for 15 years, where she was the secretary/receptionist for City Manager Bruce Hamler.

Gus was a member of the First Presbyterian Church throughout her stay in Rome. She was also a volunteer at Floyd Hospital for 40 years, longtime officer for the North Hills Homeowners Association, and member of PEO Sisterhood. She loved to play Bridge.

Gus died 16 June 2023 in Knoxville, Knox, Tennessee, USA and was buried in East View Cemetery, Rome, Floyd County, Georgia.
