Biography

Julia Rachel Finch was born 10 September 1920 in Bailey, Nash, North Carolina, United States. Her parents were Durward and Julia Reca (Whitley) Finch. [1]

Rachel's earliest years were spent on a farm just outside of Bailey, but her father died when she was seven. [2] A few years later her mother married again to another Nash County farmer. [3]

Rachel was one of three girls born to Durward and Reca. All three would be their high school's class valedictorian. [4]

Rachel married Brooks David Winstead 28 April 1937 in Emporia, Virginia. [5]

Rachel and Brooks lived for a time in Franklin County, North Carolina, then settled in Jackson Township, Nash County where Brooks farmed. [6]

Rachel and Brooks had children:

  • Julia Grey Winstead, born 27 February 1938 in Franklin County, North Carolina,[7] died 24 May 2016;[8]
  • [Living] Winstead, born June 16 1940 in Nash County;[9]
  • David Norway Winstead, born 7 April 1946 in Newport News, Virginia,[10] died 12 July 2017.[11]

Sometime between 1940 and 1946 they moved to Newport News, Virginia for a while, [10] but by 1950, they were back in Nash County and Brooks was an electrician in the Stanhope community. [12]

By 1954, they were back in Newport News and in 1956 Brooks died in Hampton, Virginia. [13]

Rachel married again to Walter Graves Clark in 1960 in Hampton. [14] Walter worked for the Colonial National Historical Park (Jamestown, Yorktown), retiring as the superintendant in 1982. [15]

Walter died in 1988. [16]

Rachel married again to Vollie Gray Faircloth 23 September 1999 in Hampton, Virginia. [17]

Rachel died 20 April 2013 in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, where she was living with her daughter . She was buried in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, Virginia. [18]
