Biography

Marie Minnie Fimmel was born in Murtoa in 1880^[1].

She married John Thomas Francis Moroney on the 18th of July, 1897^[2]. They had two children:

• Ida May Moroney (1899)
• Clare Josephine Moroney (abt 1902)

Due to "his cruelty to me and neglect" she left the marriage and changed her last name to Dalley to prevent John from making claims on her property^[3]. John Moroney died in 1911.

She married Ernest Browne in 1925^[4].

There is quite an involved description of the 'marriage' entered into court by Ma Dalley when she initiated divorce proceedings against Ernest Browne in 1929^[3]. The divorce record also gives a lot of detail about her initial marriage to John Moroney and why she changed her name to Dalley.

She was elected as the first female councillor in Kew in 1948, and then first female Mayor of Kew in 1954^[5].

She died in Kew on the 8th of May, 1965^[6][7]. She is buried at the Minyip cemetery^[8].
