Wiley graduated from the US Naval Academy, Class of 1882. He was in the United States navy twenty-three years.
In China, Captain Field protected missionaries during the period which followed the anti-Chinese riots in California. In the Argentine Republic, he guarded Americans during the revolution and spent three years in suppressing the filibustering expeditions from Florida to Cuba.
He served in ships at Suakim in the Lower Red Sea, watching the English operations against El Mahdi, the false prophet of the natives, to avenge the death of Chinese Gordon at Karthoum. He witnessed the evacuation of the Soudan. During the Spanish-American War Commander Field served in the scout cruiser Montgomery in Admiral Sampson’s fleet. He was three years in the battleship fleet.

He was recalled to Active Duty during World War I and served as Commander of the League Island Naval Yard - Philadelphia.
