Mary English was born in 1655 in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, England. She was the daughter of Joseph English Sr. by his second wife, Mary Chapman. At some point in the 1670s, Mary and her father were "convicted" of the new truths about Christianity that George Fox proposed. They joined the Society of Friends, better known as the Quakers. Unfortunately, it does not seem that her mother, Mary (Chapman) English, joined with them. The Quakers were widely persecuted in England at this time. Some genealogists say that Mary Chapman died before 1682; others say she lived in England until 1708. She did not join Mary and her husband and father when they emigrated to Pennsylvania with William Penn in 1682 aboard HMS "Welcome".
When she was 24 years old, Mary married Giles Knight in a Quaker meeting wedding ceremony in Nailsworth, Gloustershire, England on April 24, 1679.[1]
Mary (English) Knight died July 24, 1732, at her home in Byberry Township, Philadelphia County, in the English province (colony) of Pennsylvania.
Mary was born in 1655. She passed away in 1732. [2]
