When Maria J. Eggart was born in December 1822, in Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina, United States, her father, Jacob Eckhard Jr, was 34 and her mother, Juliet Eggart, was 25. Her father manumitted her mother in 1817, and so Maria was born free.
Her father died when she was 10, and her mother died the next year. She paid the Free Negro Capitation Tax in Charleston SC.
She married Edward Power Wall Jr. about 1836. They were the parents of ten children, nine of whom were still alive in 1900.
