Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Juliet Eckhard is a part of US Black heritage.

Juliet (aka Julia) was enslaved in South Carolina. in 1817, Jacob Eckhard manumitted Julia (age about 20) and her 10-month old daughter named Harriet.

Juliet had (at least) two more children: Maria and Michael. All three were described as mulatto, and the family used the last name of Eggart (also spelled Eckhard in various permutations). Presumably, Jacob is the father of all three children.

Juliet paid the Free Negro Capitation Tax in 1820, 1821, 1822, 1823, 1826, 1827, and 1832. She probably paid in 1824, 1825, and 1828-1831, but no records exist for those years.[1] According to those tax records, she lived at 41 St. Phillip Street in 1820-1822, then Beaufain Street in 1826, and then 34 St. Phillip Street.

In 1830, the US Census shows Julia Eggart [2] living in Charleston, SC. Her son, Michael (age 8), is not in the household. He may be apprenticed and living in another household.

  • free woman of color (age between 24 and 35) - Julia
  • free female of color (age between 0 and 10) - likely Harriett
  • free female of color (age between 0 and 10) - likely Maria
  • enslaved female (age between 10 and 24) - probably Celia (age 15)
  • enslaved female (age between 55 and 99) - ?

Slaves

Soon after being emancipated, Juliet purchased Grace (age 17) from Jacob Eckhard. Juliet sold Grace two years later and the next day purchased Rose. In 1826, Juliet purchased Celia (age 11). In the 1830 census, two enslaved women are in Juliet's household; the younger one is likely Celia. The older one (aged 55-99) might be Rose. When Juliet died in 1833, in her will she left Celia to her children. No mention is made in the will of Rose, who may have died between 1830-1833.

  • Grace (born c. 1804) sold by Jacob Eckhard to Juliet Eggart (a free person of color) for $400 on 24 March 1821.[3] Grace was sold to Dr. Benjamin Greenland on 30 January 1823.[4]
  • Rose - purchased by Juliet Eggart on 31 Jan 1823 for $300 from John Walker of Charleston
  • Celia (born 1815) - purchased by Juliet on 4 March 1826 from George W. Egleston of Charleston for $265.[5] Juliet's children inherited Celia in 1833.
  • a woman born between 1731 and 1776. This might be Rose.

Death

Juliet died in October 1833, in Charleston, South Carolina, United States, at the age of 36. In her will, [6], she left to her children (Harriet, Maria, and Michael) the house at 34 St. Phillips and its goods and an enslaved woman named Celia (age 18).
