Lived in Watertown, then Reading, Mass. freeman 1653.[1]
Birth
- Born: About 1618 presumably in Dover, co. Kent, England.
- Deposed age 52 in 1670. [2]
Immigration
- On a roll or list of names dated 11 May 1637 of those who had obtained Certificates as having taken the Oath of Allegiance and Supremacy and who had taken passage from the Port of sandwich in the County of Kent for the American plantations:[3]
- Wm Eaton of Staple husbandman & Martha his weif. Children: John Martha and Albe. Servant: Jonas Eaton.
- They are often said to have arrived in New England on the Hercules and Sandwich, however, the NEHGR article gives two reconstructed passenger lists. The first list is for the Hercules and Sandwich while the second ship is unnamed. The Eatons were on this unnamed second ship.
- Though listed as a servant, Jonas was almost certainly a brother of William Eaton. An analysis of the list shows that 'servants' were actually frequently family members of the primary passenger. It is reasonable to suppose that William Eaton paid for the passage of Jonas Eaton.

Common Errors to Avoid
- Incorrect parents: Jonas Eaton has been said to be a son of William Eaton of Reading, with whom he immigrated in 1635. This is certainly incorrect, as is proven both by the immigration record and by William Eaton's will. All indications are that Jonas Eaton was a younger brother of William Eaton.

Correction there’s an inventory but no Will for a Peter EATON MARINER IN 1625 and another Peter Eaton in 1632. There should be a grant of administration for each of those though but probably won’t help

Nicholas Eaton was a wealthy and politically influential merchant in Dover. He owned multiple ships including the purchase of a prize vessel which he renamed the Hercules. Is this the same Hercules which carried William and Jonas Eaton to New England?

The possibility that the Jonas Eaton who traveled with William as his servant was William's brother is noted by Lines in Granbury Family and in NEHGR 76:73 (both cited in the profile). Lines concludes they were "probably" brothers, and the NEHGR article concludes they were "presumably...closely related" but also notes that "no mention of relationship between them has yet been found." It does seem very likely that Jonas and William were related in some way, but they could as easily have been cousins as brothers. Should we detach the parents and include a Research Note pending further evidence supporting a conclusion one way or the other?

Yes it has been assumed that he is a brother rather than a servant. There’s all sorts of possibilities it could be that Jonas was looking for a passage from Dover and was engaged by William as a servant . I’ll have a look at Williams profile and see if I can find other members of the family.

The location of the marriage is quite a long distance and the date is a month later than the Eaton's registered to sail for New England, but do we know when the ships actually left England?
