William Dowling served in the United States Civil War.

Gen." William Henry Taylor Dowling was a member of Cavalry regiments in both Florida and Georgia during The War Between the States. He was one of the final National Commanders of The United Confederate Veterans, and the last resident of The Georgia Confederate Soldiers Home. He died of pneumonia on Nov. 6, 1948 having almost reached the century mark. He is interred at Manchester Cemetery in Manchester, Georgia. His wife, Georgia, and some of their 15 children are interred next to him.
