In 1900, William O. Douglas lived with his parents, William and Julia V. Douglas, and a sister in Maine Township, Otter Tail, Minnesota. His father was a preacher who came to the United States in 1894.[2]
His father died in Portland, Oregon, in 1904,[3] and the family moved to Yakima, Washington.
In 1916, Douglas graduated as Valedictorian from Yakima High School, Yakima, Washington, and then from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. He entered Columbia Law School in 1922 and graduated in 1925, second in his class.[4]
He practiced law with a private firm, then he taught law and Columbia Law School, then as Yale Law School, D.C. He went to Washington to work in the Roosevelt administration and was appointed to the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission in 1937.[4] Franklin D. Roosevelt named Douglas to the US Supreme Court, where he served as an Associate Justice from April 17, 1939, to November 12, 1975.[5]
Douglas married four times and had two children.
William Douglas died on 19 Jan 1980 at Walter Reed Hospital, Bethesda, Montgomery, Maryland, and he is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington, Virginia.[1]
