Records from the National Archives show he was enlisted in Company I, 64th Georgia Infantry Regiment on 24 March 1863, in Columbus, Georgia. Zachariah Dorrough was captured by union forces on the 6th of April 1865 at Burksville, Nottoway, Virgina. He died as a prisoner of war at Point Lookout, Maryland 30 May 1865. Cause of death is attributed to Chronic Diarrhea. Initially buried at the prison site in an area refered to as the "Pen". The bodies were moved tp Tanner Creek in 1870. They were again moved in 1910 to their present resting site at Scottland, Maryland. A Monument erected by the federal goverment in 1910 has 12 bronze tablets listing the names and organizations of the confederate dead.
