Biography

BRUCE DONALDSON Bruce was the youngest child of Adrian Mervyn Hay Donaldson and Isabel Sloan (nee McLennan) Donaldson. He was born on Wednesday 7 April 1943 in King George V Hospital at Camperdown. His birth name was Dale Bruce Donaldson; however he changed his name officially in 1988 to Bruce Donaldson removing the first name of Dale. He does not have a middle name. He lived with his parents in their home in Blaxland N.S.W. until the age of 17. Bruce attended Blaxland Public, Penrith Primary, and Penrith High Schools. He trained to become a primary school teacher at Wagga Wagga Teacher’s College in 1961 & 1962. His first teaching appointment was in 1963 at Gunnedah Primary School. In 1966, he went overseas for two years, teaching in Bentley Primary School, Alberta, Canada, for a year, and then toured Europe and England. Whilst traveling on the Empress of Canada from Montreal to Liverpool, UK, he met his future wife who was returning from a nursing exchange in America. On 24 August 1968, Bruce and Janice Elizabeth Macdonald were married at St Columbus Presbyterian Church, Balwyn, Victoria. Jan, daughter of Ewen Kenneth and Elizabeth Macdonald, nee Arnold, was born on 8 June 1940 in Malvern, Victoria. Bruce and his father built their home at 8 Bridge Road, Blaxland, in 1970. He has spent the majority of his teaching career in the outer western suburbs of Sydney, specializing in teaching children with disabilities and has been the Principal at various schools. Bruce and Jan have two children, both born in Penrith; Elizabeth Jane, born 4 June and Susan Dale, born 26 June . After an extended period of separation the marriage between Bruce and Jan ended in divorce on 22nd March 1988. In April 1988 Bruce was appointed as Principal of Ettalong Primary School after working with the Special Education Directorate of the NSW Department of Education, in Parramatta for two years. Bruce met Karen Morris in late 1988. They were married on 14 January 1989 in Sydney. Karen was the daughter of Beryl Morris (nee Powell) and Albert Edward Morris. In 1989 Karen was appointed as a Special Education Teacher to Ettalong Primary School. Karen and Bruce have two children. Katrina Ann Donaldson was born on 6 Oct and James Stephen Donaldson was born on 3 Sept . In 1994 James was diagnosed as being severely Autistic. Karen and Bruce renovated an old home at 115 Mt Ettalong Road Umina over a period of ten years, while they both worked at Ettalong Primary School. In 2003 Karen and Bruce, Katrina and James moved to their new home in Crystal Ave Pearl Beach. The house was designed specifically to accommodate 7 adults including Karen's Mother and Father and her brother Stephen. In 2005 Bruce retired as Principal of Ettalong Primary School and Karen retired in 2009.

James and Margaret Donaldson (nee Grant) our ancestors arrival in Australia is recorded on an inscription on

"The Welcome Wall" at "The Sydney Maritime Museum" . The location of this inscription is on Panel 31 Column 1 Line 141 James and Margaret and their eight children arrived in Sydney on 13th July1837 from Scotland aboard "The John Barry". They initially remained in quarantine due to the typhus on board. James worked as a stonemason on many of Sydney's early buildings. James and Margaret now have hundreds of descendants as recorded in the book "The Donaldson Family in Australia". James and Margaret Donaldson have an inscription on the "Welcome Wall" outside the "Sydney Maritime Museum" which can be found at the following location. Panel 31 Column 1 Line 141
