Biography

Margherita di Puma is born and baptized 19 September 1775 in Corleone, named after her paternal grandmother. She is the daughter of Mercurio di Puma and Gaetana Trumbatore. Her godparents are Don Carmelo Marullo and Lucia, wife of Martino Porcarello.[1]

First Marriage, to Marco Colletto

Margherita marries twice, first to Marco Colletto on 3 February 1793. Her parents are both still living.[2].

Margherita and Marco have at least three children: Anna Maria (1794), Bernarda (1797), and Vincenzo (1800).

Anna Maria is born and baptized 22 May 1794, named after her paternal grandmother. Her godparents are Gaetano and Caterina di Rao, a married couple.

Bernarda is born 13 January 1797 and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Maestro Giuliano d'Amore and Maria Gulotta.

Vincenzo is born and baptized 7 December 1800, named after his paternal grandfather. His godparents are Giuseppe Colletto and Carmela Puma, who are not married.

Marco dies at age 32 (b. 1769---actually, he is 42) on 21 November 1801.

Although recently deceased, Marco Colletto, reportedly 35, heads a household in the 1802 Church census of the Borgo in Corleone. Also in the household are Margherita, his wife, reportedly 25 (b. 19 Sep 1775, she is 26-7), and children: Anna Maria, 7 (b. 22 May 1794), Bernarda, reportedly 6 (b. 13 Jan 1797, she is 5), and Vincenzo, reportedly 1 (b. 7 Dec 1800, he is 2).[3]

Second Marriage, to Nunzio Navarra

Margherita marries Nunzio Navarra on 8 October 1804. Her father, Mercurio, has died by this time, and her mother, Gaetana, is still living.

Margherita and Nunzio have at least seven children: three sons named Antonino (1805, 1813, and 1818), Leoluca (1807), Maria Carmela (1810), Antonio (1815), and Maria (c. 1822).

The first Antonino is born and baptized 21 April 1805, named after his paternal grandfather. His godparents are Paolo and Antonina Nieri, a married couple.

In the 1807 Church census, Nunzio Navarra, 41 (b. 1766), lives with his wife, Margherita, 31 (b. 1776), and their children, near the Chiesa di Canzoneri (Canzoneri church). The children listed are: Anna Maria Colletti, 11 (b. 1796), Bernarda Colletti, 10 (b. 1797), Vincenzo Colletti, 6 (b. 1801), and Antonino Navarra, 2 (b. 1805) The Colletti children are Margherita's from her first marriage, to Marco Colletti.

A few of the families living near the Chiesa di Canzoneri (Canzoneri church) are those headed by Nicolo' Grizzaffi, brothers Giuseppe and Salvatore Ligotino, Michaele Pennino, and Nicolo' Puccio.

Leoluca is born and baptized on 8 December 1807. His godparents are Francesco Pumilla and Cosma Provenzano, wife of Gaspare.

On 14 September 1809, Antonio, four years old, and Leoluca, a year and ten months old, both die.

Maria Carmela is born and baptized on 22 July 1810. Her godparents are her paternal uncle Francesco and Gioachina Navarra, a married couple.

The second Antonino is born and baptized 9 April 1813. His godparents are Biagio and Antonina Birtone, a married couple. He is presumed to have died before his brother is born in 1815.

Margherita and Marco's daughter, Anna Maria, marries Filippo Quaglino on 28 September 1814. Margherita is still living. This record, and that of Anna Maria's death, call her di Prima.

Antonio is born and baptized 20 July 1815. His godparents are Antonino and Maria Concetta Cutrera, a married couple.

Carmela dies at five years of age (b. 1810) on 2 January 1816.

Antonio dies eleven days later, at five months of age.

The third son named Antonino is born 29 April 1818 and baptized the next day. His godparents are Biagio and Antonina Birtone, a married couple.

Maria is known from the record of her death in infancy on 30 August 1822.

Vincenzo dies at age 30 (b. 1808) on 10 June 1838. He is survived by his wife, Anna Maria Friia. Margherita has died by this time.

Anna Maria dies at age 62 (b. 1794) on 7 February 1857. She is survived by her husband, Filippo.

Bernarda dies at age 70 on 30 April 1867. She is the widow of Andrea Cannaliato.

The surviving son named Antonino is called Antonio in the record of his death, reportedly at age 83 (he is 78) on 16 September 1896 at 1:15 pm. He is the widower of Innocenza Cutrera.
