Biography

Vincent Paul "Vince" DiMaggio (September 6, 1912 – October 3, 1986) was an American Major League Baseball center fielder. He was the son of Joseph DiMaggio. During a 10-year baseball career, he played for the Boston Bees (1937–1938), Cincinnati Reds (1939–1940), Pittsburgh Pirates (1940–1945), Philadelphia Phillies (1945–1946), and New York Giants (1946). Vince was the older brother of Joe and Dom DiMaggio.

Baseball Career

Professional Baseball Player. Vince DiMaggio's career spanned 10 years with 5 clubs: Boston Bees (1937-1940); Cincinnati Reds (1939-1940); Pittsburgh Pirates (1940-1944); Philadelphia Phillies (1945-1946) and New York Giants (1946). His ashes, which were originally interred at Valhalla Memorial Park, North Hollywood, California in Lot 111, Garden Of Remembrance, were removed in 1992 to Rose Memorial Park in Fort Bragg, California.

Obituary

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 3— Vince DiMaggio, the oldest of the baseball-playing DiMaggio brothers, died today at his home in nearby North Hollywood. He was 74 years old.

According to his wife, he had been diagnosed as having cancer of the colon.

Mr. DiMaggio's brother Joe was elected to the Hall of Fame after an illustrious career with the New York Yankees. His brother Dominic had a long career with the Boston Red Sox.

Mr. DiMaggio played 10 years in the National League as an outfielder with the Boston Braves, the Cincinnati Reds, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Giants.

He had a career batting average of .249 with 125 home runs and 584 runs batted in. His best season for the Pirates was in 1941 when he hit 21 homeruns and drove in 100 runs. He holds the National League record for most seasons leading the league in strikeouts, with six.

Besides his brothers, Mr. DiMaggio is survived by his wife, two children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
