In 1862, he assumed arms and additional surname of Canning, under terms of the will of his maternal uncle, Charles John (Canning) 1st Earl Canning.
Upon death of his father, Ulick John (de Burgh) in 1874, Hubert George de-Burgh-Canning succeeded him as 2nd Marquess of Clanricarde.
Upon his death all his peerages became extinct, save the second creation of the earldom of Clanricarde, which passed by special remainder to the 6th Marquess of Sligo.

The 6th Marquess of Sligo was his cousin through De_Burgh-272.
