Peter Smith Dawson, singer, was born on 31 January 1882 in Adelaide, youngest of nine children of Thomas Dawson, ironworker and plumber, and his wife Alison, née Miller.

Peter attended the East Adelaide Primary School and Pulteney Street Grammar School, and was then apprenticed to his father.
Peter Dawson (bass-baritone)[3] was also an autobiographer/memoirist and songwriter[4]
In 1938 he recorded Waltzing Matilda on 78 RPM.[5]
In 1905 Peter married Annie Mortimer Noble in Westminster, London, England.

His wife, Annie, a soprano, had a stage name of "Annette George". Peter and Annie had no children and often toured together internationally until a serious car accident ended her public career.
Peter died on 22 Sep 1961 in Sydney, New South Wales, aged 79 years. He was buried at Rookwood Cemetery ( Presbyterian Section 5F ROW 23 grave 2196).
