Elizabeth's mother Sarah married David Williams on 8 January 1873 in St Peter's parish church, in Liverpool, Lancashire, England.[2] David Williams was a widower and a mariner.[2] Elizabeth's mother Elizabeth's new stepfather David Williams were both listed as living on Brook Street, Liverpool, at the time of their marriage, although it is not clear whether they were cohabiting or were merely neighbors.[2]

Elizabeth (age 14) emigrated from England to the United States in 1884 with her mother, stepfather, and her older sister, Sarah.[4] They sailed from Liverpool, England, on the Nevada and they arrived at the Port of New York on 13 August 1884.[4] Elizabeth, her mother, and her sister traveled in the Aft Steerage area of the Nevada, while her father traveled in the Fore Steerage area.[4] Elizabeth's family traveled with a total of 3 pieces of luggage.[4] Elizabeth's stepfather was noted as being from Birkenhead, Wales, which was just across the River Mersey from Liverpool.[4]
