Biography

Margaret Adela Davies was born in North Wales 11 May 1852. [1] She immigrated with her family to the area of Bridgewater, New York in 1857.[2] Maggie married John William Jamesin Bridgewater, 4 July 1870.[3][4] The couple settled on the farm in Bridgewater next to John's brother Thomas and his father William. [5][6] In 1876, the James family moved to Montgomery County, Iowa, along with his brother William Morris James and his family.[7] In 1885, the families moved again, this time to Wayne County, Nebraska.[8]

The family remained in Nebraska until March 1903, when they decided to follow their son, Edward and John's brother William who had relocated to Ponoka, Alberta, Canada in 1901 and 1902. The following is an excerpt from the publication From Wales to Wood River. [9]

THE JOHN W. JAMES FAMILY
In March 1903, John and Margaret James and four of their six sons moved to Ponoka, Alberta from Columbus, Nebraska where John had been manager of a large County Farm.[2] The James family came by train to Alberta bringing with them two carloads of stock, implements and household goods. With them were Frank, Griff, Johnny and Ervie. The second son, Edward, had come in 1901, while the eldest son, Will H., did not come until 1918. They settled in the Magic and Climax districts east of Ponoka, Alberta. After Will H. arrived there were five brothers all owning land within a radius of four miles. [10] [11][12][13]
Mr. and Mrs. James took an active part in the church life of the community, being stalwart supporters of the Magic, then Zion Church. Mr. James was an ardent Liberal and enjoyed politics. All the sons were interested in sports and politics. As a rule their views on politics differed and great debates were heard at election times. John and Maggie James moved to an acreage by the North Road and spent their declining years there. They celebrated silver, golden and diamond wedding anniversaries in the district.

John passed away on January 14, 1931 and Margaret on June 7, 1934. Both are buried in the Forest Home Cemetery in Ponoka.[1]
