On 3 February 1883 in Vairano Patenora, Bartolomeo d’Arezzo, age 33 (b. 1850), contadino, reports the birth on 2 February in via Ruorello of Maria Michela Nocca, his wife, contadina, with whom he lives, of a baby girl who is named Vincenza, Maria, Colomba.[1]
Luigi Candelmo, age 22 (b. 1881), son of Raffaele Candelmo and Maria T., marries Vincenza d’Arezzo, age 18 (b. 1885), daughter of Bartolomeo d’Arezzo and Maria M. on 8 February 1903 in Providence, Providence, RI.[2]
Luigi and Vincenza have eight children: Ernesto Frederico (1903), Achillo/John/Giovanni (1905), Rosina (1907), Anna (1908), Amelia/Mollie (1910), Antonio/Anthony (1912), Guido/Bill (1913), and Eleanor (1916).
Ernest is born 15 December 1904 in Providence, RI.
John is born 28 March 1906. He is called "Achillo" in early census records.
In the 1910 federal census of Providence, Ward 8, taken 22 April, Luigi Cantelmo, 30 (b. 1880), heads a household at 77 Hillhurst St with his wife of 8 years, Vincenzina, 26 (b. 1884). It is the first marriage for them both, both born in Italy. Their oldest son, Ernesto, 7 (b. 1903), was also born in Italy. The rest of the children at home were all born in RI: Achillo, 5 (b. 1905), Rosina, 3 (b. 1907), and Anna, 2 (b. 1908). Also living with them are Luigi’s brother Angelo, 26 (b. 1884), married for less than a year; sister Luigia, 29 (b. 1881), single; and brother-in-law Luico Darezzo, 18 (b. 1892), single, all born in Italy. Luigi, Vincenzina, and Ernesto emigrated in 1902. Angelo and Luigia emigrated in 1907 and Luico in 1904. Luigi is a weaver in a worsting mill. Vincenzina has a store and rents rooms on her own account. Angelo and Luico are hod carriers working for a contractor. Luigia is a spinner in a worsted mill.[3]
Amelia is born 29 June 1910. Her father calls her "Mollie" when he declares his intention to naturalize.
Guido, later called Bill, is born 5 November 1914.
In the 1915 Rhode Island state census, Luigi Cantelono, 25 (b. 1890), born in Italy, heads a household at 77 Hauxhurst St with his wife Vincenza, 30 (b. 1885), born in Italy, and their children Ernest, 12 (b. 1903), Agile (Achillo), 10 (b. 1905), Rose, 9 (b. 1906), Annie, 7 (b. 1908), Amelia, 5 (b. 1910), Antonio, 3 (b. 1912), and Guido, 1 (b. 1914), all born in the US. Luigi is a weaver employed by a woolen mill.[4]
Luigi Candelmo registers for the draft for WWI on 12 September 1918. He lives at 77 Hillchrest Ave, Providence, RI. His nearest relative is Vincenza Candelmo at the same home address.[5]
In the 1925 Rhode Island state census conducted 22 April 1925 in Providence, Providence Co., Luigi Candellmo, 45 (b. 1880), born in Italy, heads a household at 141 Pocasset Ave with his wife Vincenza, 41 (b. 1884), born in Italy, and children Ernest, 21 (b. 1904), Rose, 18 (b. 1907), Anna, 16 (b. 1909), Amelia, 14 (b. 1911), Anthony, 13 (b. 1912), Guido, 11 (b. 1914), and Eleanor, 9 (b. 1916), all born in RI.[6]
In the 1930 federal census of Providence, Providence, RI, taken 16 April, Luigi Candanalmo?, 50 (b. 1880), born in Italy, heads a household at 141 Pocasset Ave. He owns his home, worth $8,000. Also at home are his wife Vincenza, 48 (b. 1882), born in Italy. They married at 23 and 19 (m. 1903). Their children at home are Amelia, 19 (b. 1911), Antonio, 18 (b. 1912), Guido, 16 (b. 1914), and Eleanor, 14 (b. 1916), all born in RI. Luigi is a weaver in a woolen mill. Amelia is a button maker for an electric button manufacturer. Antonio is a helper for a monuments company.[7]
In the US District Court, District of Rhode Island, Luigi Candelmo declares his intention to become a US citizen. He lives at 141 Pocasset Ave, Providence, Providence, RI. He married Vincenza on 8 February 1903 in Providence, RI. She was born in Vairano on 2 February 1883. She entered the US through Boston, MA on 27 November 1902, now lives at Providence, RI.
Luigi dies 1 August 1957 at age 78. He is buried in Saint Ann Cemetery in Cranston, Providence, RI.[10]
Death of Vincenza
Vincenza D’Arezzo Candelmo, born 2 February 1883, dies 24 June 1975 at age 92. She is buried in Saint Ann Cemetery in Cranston, RI.[11]
