Biography

Achillo "John" Candelmo is born 28 March 1905 in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of Luigi Candelmo and Vincenza D'Arezzo. In the first record in which he appears, the 1910 census, he is called Achillo. He is usually known as "John," leading to an FBI file calling him "Giovanni." Cascio-10 18:51, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

In the 1910 federal census of Providence, Ward 8, taken 22 April, Luigi Cantelmo, 30 (b. 1880), heads a household at 77 Hillhurst St with his wife of 8 years, Vincenzina, 26 (b. 1884). It is the first marriage for them both, both born in Italy. Their oldest son, Ernesto, 7 (b. 1903), was also born in Italy. The rest of the children at home were all born in RI: Achillo, 5 (b. 1905), Rosina, 3 (b. 1907), and Anna, 2 (b. 1908). Also living with them are Luigi’s brother Angelo, 26 (b. 1884), married for less than a year; sister Luigia, 29 (b. 1881), single; and brother-in-law Luico Darezzo, 18 (b. 1892), single, all born in Italy. Luigi, Vincenzina, and Ernesto emigrated in 1902. Angelo and Luigia emigrated in 1907 and Luico in 1904. Luigi is a weaver in a worsting mill. Vincenzina has a store and rents rooms on her own account. Angelo and Luico are hod carriers working for a contractor. Luigia is a spinner in a worsted mill.[1]

In the 1925 Rhode Island state census of Cranston, Providence, RI, John Candelmo, age 20 (b. 1905), born in Rhode Island, is a prisoner of the State Prison[2]

As early as 1937, John is an associate of Raymond Patriarca.[3]

John Candelmo, aka Candy, 1905-1970, born in the US, is a soldier in the New England crime family, active in the 1940-60s.[4]

In the 1940 federal census of Providence, Ward 7, Providence, RI, taken 1 April, John Candelmo, 35 (b. 1905), born in Rhode Island, lived in NYC on 1 April 1935, heads a household at 142 Pocasset Ave with his wife Doris, 21 (b. 1919), born in Maryland, who lived in Baltimore on 1 April 1935. Giovanni is in retail milk working on his own account in the dairy industry. Bartolomeo is a cement layer for Clement Bldg Construction.

The next household, at the same address, is headed by Bartholomew D’Arezzo, 25 (b. 1915), and his wife Elvera, 21 (b. 1919), both born in RI and lived in Cranston on 1 April 1935.[5]

A. Giovanni Candelmo registers for the draft for WWII on 16 October 1940. He lives at 142 Pocasset Ave., Providence, Providence, RHI. He is 35, born 28 March 1905 in Providence, RI. His contact is Mrs. Lola Doris Candelmo, his wife, at the same address. Giovanni is self-employed at the same address. He signs his own name. Giovanni is 5’6” and 194# with hazel eyes, black hair, and a dark complexion.[6]

Note: There is another John Candelmo, born 20 November 1905 in Providence, the son of Giuseppe and Antonetta, who spends most of his life in Italy. He has a partially paralyzed right arm. In the draft for WWII, he lives at 142 Pocasset Ave., the same address as Achillo Giovanni, born in March of the same year.[7] They are presumed to be cousins.

In the 1941 Providence, RI city directory, John Candelmo and his wife, Doris, live at 142 Pocasset Ave. John is a milk dealer. His brothers Anthony and Ernest live nearby and are listed as milk men. Anthony still lives at home at 141 Pocasset Ave; their father, Luigi, still works as a weaver.[8]

Death of John

John Candelmo, born 28 March 1905, dies at age 65 in December 1970. He last resided in Providence, RI 02909.[9]

He is buried in Saint Ann Cemetery in Cranston, Providence, RI.[10]

According to FBI informants, sometime around 1972, Guido Candelmo produces identification with a date of birth of 5 November 1913. His brother Giovanni Candelmo, who died in 1971, was a bookmaker associated with many Rhode Island hoodlums.[11]
