He was a Washington correspondent for the New York Herald in the 1800's.
Edward was commissioned a Colonel for the Union Army, 5th New Hampshire Infantry. He served from 1860–63 in the American Civil War, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, and the Battle of Gettysburg where he was killed in action on July 3, 1863.
He was buried in Wilder Cemetery in Lancaster, Coos County, New Hampshire, USA.
