Gerard was born in 1897. He is the son of Charles Crone and Maud Chinnery.

Son of Charles Herbert and Maude Crone, of 10, Rothwell Rd., Gosforth, Newcastle-on-tyne. Also Served at Gallipoli.

24 April 1915 On Nominal Roll, Benbow Battalion, Blandford. 12 June 1915 Transferred from Benbow Battalion to Drake Battalion, "C" Coy, Gallipoli. 4 November 1915 Disembarked at Malta from Hospital Ship Soudan. Pyrexia (Fever) 12 December 1915 Embarked for England per Hospital Ship Ebani from Malta, Invalided Home. May 1916 Attached to 2nd Drake Battalion, "A" Company. Joined Base Deport Calais from Blandford. Draft for BEF 27 February 1917, joined Drake Bn. 22 March - 23 April 1917.
