Biography

John (Craufurd) Craufurd XIIth of Craufurdland is a member of Clan Crawford.

John Craufurd 12th Laird of Craufurdland succeeded his father when only an infant.^[1] After his father's death, his mother remarried Robert Hunter of Hunterston, by whom he was raised.

He married Margaret Blair, daughter of John Blair, of that Ilk.^[2] They had three sons and five daughters.^[3][1]

A natural son, also named Robert, was gifted the lands of Nethertown of Kilmarnock, by his father.^[1][4] This son died as a result of his wounds after the Battle of Pinkie,^[4] in October 1547.^[1]

John received a charter under the great seal from King James IV for the lands of Giffordland, in Ayrshire. The charter is dated March 27, 1576.^[1] This line became a cadet branch of Craufurdland.

He died in 1583, at the age of 71, and was succeeded by his eldest son, John.^[1]

• The date of birth as stated is not confirmed by any source at the moment. It is a calculated estimate.

• Margaret Crauford (heir-proportioner = a divider of the estate) was the sister of Isabel Craufurd (who married John Crauford of Walston)

• This John Craufurd who married Margaret Blair should not be confused with another John Crawford who married a different Margaret Blair.^[5]
