From the Genealogies of Long Island Families: In the records of the Freehold-Middletown Dutch Church, there is a baptism, under the date of June 7, 1724, of an unnamed child of John and Jacoba Covenhoven, and most researchers believe this entry applies to Dominicus.
During the Revolutionary War Dominicus Covenhoven served as a Private in Capt. Robert Nixon's Troop of Light Horse, Middlesex County Militia. His wife is Mary Updike. He was killed by lightning and his funeral held on June 28, 1778, the day of the Battle of Monmouth.
In his will, dated Apr. 18, 1778, and proved June 23, 1778, Dominicus Covenhoven of Windsor Township, yeoman, mentioned his wife Mary and five sons, John, William, Garret, Levi, and Peter. The executors were his wife and sons John and William, and the will was witnessed by Moses Groom, Elisha Cook, and William Slayback. (NJA: 34:111). [2]
About 1747, he married Mary Updike, a daughter of William Updike of Windsor Township (Opdyck Gen. 1889, p. 205).
