Henry Cove was born in Middlesex, England.

Biography

Henry was born on 13 Feb 1808 in Paddington, then in the county of Middlesex. He was the second son and third child of Augustus Cove and Sarah White. His parents lived on Chapel Street, not far from Paddington Basin, an offshoot of the Grand Junction Canal then being developed into new wharves. His father Augustus rented one of these wharves from which he shipped china and glassware for his business. In 1811, Augustus was expelled by the Quakers following a very public legal dispute with the canal company, which he lost despite being the injured party. Despite this, Henry remained a Quaker all his life.

He became a linen draper in Tottenham with premises on the High Road where he lived and worked from at least 1841 until at least 1891. His son William took over the running of the business sometime before 1891.

Henry wed Mary Wells in a Quaker marriage ceremony on 1 Jun 1846 in the Wellingborough District of Northamptonshire.

Henry and Mary had nine children between 1847 and 1863 (birth dates in brackets): William Henry (1847), Sarah Elizabeth (1849), Priscilla (born 1850, died 1851), James George (1852), Henrietta (1854), Samuel West (1856), Joseph Augustus (1858), Mary Ellen (1860) and Anna Maria (1863).

He was an elder and Registering Officer for Quaker marriages for the Tottenham Friends Meeting House from 1867 until his death. He died on 1 August 1896 at the home of his son-in-law, William Blunsom (husband of his daughter Sarah Elizabeth), in Northampton.
