Jesse Cornelison served in the United States Civil War. Side: USA Regiment(s): 24th Missouri Infantry /73rd Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia
Jesse was born around 1826 in Illinois to Garrett Cornelison and Elizabeth Watkins. He led a colorful life, marrying at age 21 to Delany Holdaway and having a son with her in 1848. The next year he had second son with another woman, Suzanna Bookout, for whom he apparently left his wife. Jesse and Delany divorced in Feb of 1852, but it doesn't seem he married the other woman, even though they had several children.
Jesse joined the Union Army in 1861, was given leave in Feb of 1862 and didn't return. He was listed as a deserter, yet his first son, William, was able to apply for a survivor's pension in 1890[1]. While at home, sitting on his porch on Dec 16, 1862, Jesse was shot and killed by Confederate soldiers[2]. He was 36 years old.
William was 14 at the time. He waited two years and in 1864 lied about being 18 and enlisted with the US Army.
