Biography

Francis Cole was born to unknown parents, likely in England before 1620.[1] Francis married a woman named Alice and, by her, had two daughters, Frances and Mary, the first of which was likely born before 1641, suggesting Francis had wed before 1640.[2]

Francis paid taxes in Lancaster County, Virginia Colony, based on his labor force. The county assessed him, as a gentleman, for five tithables, 24 Oct 1653,[3] again for five tithables, 6 Feb 1655,[4] for three tithables, 7 Dec 1655,[5] and for five tithables, 5 Nov 1656.[6]

By 29 Sep 1658, Francis had died, as his widow Alice on that date was granted probate of his will.[7] Alice was then was taxed for six tithables, 31 Oct 1658.[8] By 1659, his wife had remarried (taking as her second husband, George Marsh), and his daughter, Frances, had married John Haselwood.[9]
