Franklin Pearce Cole was born on September 18, 1852. He was the son of William Cole and Margaret Kring. He was christened on May 7, 1853 at Hoffman Lutheran Church, Jenner Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania.[1] Although his mother's name is shown as Rebecca, this is incorrect as a later sibling's mother also is shown as Marget. Also, guardianship papers show he is from this father.
"At an orphans court held at Somerset in and for Somerset county on the 27th day of Nov. 1871. Before the Honorable Judges through the petition of Frank. P. Cole Respectfully Represent that he is a minor son of Harrison Cole deceased and has no person legally appointed to take charge of his person and Estate. He therefore pays the court to permit him to choose a guardian for that purpose.." Jonathan J. Berkley was appointed guardian.[2]
In the 1870 census Franklin is living with Jonathan Barclay (Berkley) who is a farmer. Franklin is 16, attending school, and a laborer.[3]
