Biography

Isaac Clifford was born on 24 May 1696 in Hampton, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire, the son of Israel Clifford and Ann (Smith) Clifford. ^{[1] [2] [3]} He married about 1716 to Sarah Taylor, daughter of William Taylor of Exeter, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire. ^{[2] [4] [5] [6]}

They settled in Kingston, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire, where Isaac was a yeoman, tax collector and constable. In 1736 / 37 he owned land in both Kingston and Exeter. ^[2] Isaac and Sarah (Taylor) Clifford had 11 children born in Kingston as follows: ^{[2] [4] [5]}

Isaac's wife, Sarah (Taylor) Clifford, died a couple of years later on 10 Nov 1741 in Kingston, Rockingham, New Hampshire. ^{[2] [5]} Isaac died about four years later on 11 Sep 1745 in Kingston. ^{[2] [4] [5]}

Administration of his estate was granted to Joseph Clifford of Kingston on 27 Sep 1745. His estate was valued at 1966 pounds, 3 shillings, 6 pence. On 25 Feb 1746 / 47 Jedediah Philbrick, gentleman, was named guardian for Israel (age 18), Zachariah (age 16), and Tristram (age 8). Division of the estate was allowed on 26 Sep 1750 as follows: Joseph - 2 shares as eldest son; 1 share each to Tristram, Zachariah, Sarah, Isaac, David, Israel, William, and Elizabeth. Abigail and John were not mentioned. ^{[7] [2]}

Research Notes

Several sources have greatly confused this Isaac with his son of the same name - the son also married a Sarah to add to the confusion. We are in the process of sorting them out. The best guide is Charlotte Nicely. ^[2] In brief:

• Isaac Clifford Sr. (the father above) (1696 - 1745) married Sarah Taylor and had children: Joseph, Isaac Jr., Sarah, David, William, Israel, Zachariah, Abigail, Elizabeth, John, and Tristram. He was a constable in Kingston, NH.
• Isaac Clifford Jr. (the son of the father above) (1721 - aft 1782) married Sarah Healey and had children: Sarah, Isaac III, Nathaniel, Elizabeth, Bridgett, Zachariah, John, Samuel, Johanna, and Huldah. He was a constable in Rumney, NH.

This confusion may have been (and currently being) caused by Ezra S. Stearns's (et al) conflation of the two Isaacs (father/son) in his Genealogical and family history of the state of New Hampshire : a record of the achievements of her people in the making of a commonwealth and the founding of a nation (1908). On page 878 of the work, Stearns has Isaac Sr. marrying Sarah Healy (aka Healey), when Sarah Healy married Isaac Jr. not Isaac Sr. Interestingly, Stearns lists no spouse for Isaac Jr. Reference to another work that is correct: Noyes, et al. Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, NEHGS, reprinted 2012, p. 151.

Isaac was born 24 May 1696 in New Hampshire to Israel and Ann (Smith) Clifford.^[8] He "went to Ki.; then to Chester, where he m. Sarah Healey; and eventually settled in Rumney." ^[9]

"Their son, Nathan, m. Lydia Simpson, of Greenland. Dea. Nathan and Lydia (Simpson) Clifford had seven children, one of whom was Hon. Nathan Clifford LLD, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, who settled in Newfield, Me.; m. Hannah Ayer and had six children; moved to Portland, Me. In 1850, and d. there in 1881. Hon. William Henry Clifford, counsellor at law, and in patent causes of Portland, is his son."

Research Notes

Be careful; Isaac had a son named Isaac and a grandson named Isaac. On FamilySearch, someone had put in the death date of Isaac's son. It is not known when this Isaac died. Maybe check church records?
