Biography

Anthony Clapham was born in Newcastle, Northumberland, England.

Anthony Clapham (1815-1881) was born on the 17th April 1815 in Newcastle upon Tyne. ^[1] He was the son of Anthony Clapham and Elizabeth Foster who were Quakers. ^[2]

He followed his father's footsteps and became a chemist and married on the 1st October 1839 in Edinburgh, Scotland to Lucy Sinclair. ^[3]

In the 1841 census he was recorded as a chemist living on High West Street in Gateshead ^[5] but lived, briefly, in Poplar, London in 1844 when his second child was born. ^[4]
They returned north and in the 1851 census were living at New Greenwich in Gateshead. ^[6] In the mid 1850s lived for a couple of years at Ridley Villas on New Bridge Street ^[7] moving to Oxford Street before 1860. ^[8] and in the 1861 census he was recorded as a manufacturing chemist living there. ^[9] They remained there a few years moving his final move to Lovaine Crescent, Newcastle before 1867. ^[10]
In the 1871 census he was recorded as a manufacturer of cement ^{[11] [12]} and was still in residence there a decade later, although widowed by then. ^[13]

He died the following month on the 2nd May 1881 at Lovaine Crescent. ^{[14] [15] [16]}
