Biography

Anthony Clapham was born in Newcastle, Northumberland, England.

Anthony Clapham (1778-1852) was born on the 23rd June 1778 in Newcastle upon Tyne. ^[1] He was the son of a farmer, Anthony Clapham and his wife Elizabeth Holme who were Quakers. ^[1]

He became a chemist and druggist and ran his business in Pilgrim Street, Newcastle from 1803. ^[2]

He married Elizabeth Foster on the 27th September 1809 at the Friends' Brigflatts Meeting House near Sedbergh. ^[3]

They lived in the early years, in All Saints parish, Newcastle upon Tyne and over the next 20 years they would have at least 9 children although their first son, Anthony, born in 1812, ^[4] died in childhood. Before 1818 he moved into Benwell Grove, a new estate near Benwell in Newcastle ^{[5] [7]} and all subsequent children were born there. ^[6]

It appears Anthony over extended himself and in 1834 was declared bankrupt which resulted in the sale at auction of both the estate and his soapworks at Ouseburn. ^[8]

N.B. There was another bankruptcy for Anthony Clapham in 1840 also but this could have been either him or his son who was in the same business. ^[9] This setback did not seem to dampen his enthusiasm and he moved to Friars Goose at Gateshead across the river and continued as a manufacturing chemist. ^[10]

In due course he retired from business and settled back in Newcastle on Summerhill Terrace in the Westgate/Elswick district. ^[11] In the 1851 census he was shown there with his wife and 2 of his children still in residence. ^[12]

He died on the 17th June 1852 at Summerhill Terrace aged 73 years. ^{[13] [14]}
