Research Notes

Marriage

Patience Cole's parentage and birth year is unknown, nor is it known if "Cole" was her maiden surname. The only birth in the Rhode Island Town Records that could fit is Patience born 1743, four years older than Jeremiah, daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Beverly) Cole. But she married Peter Reynolds and was married to him into at least the 1790s, as proved by her father's will and land records.

Census

Jeremiah appeared as head of household at Warren in the 1774 Census of Rhode Island[5]. His household distribution and inferred attributions are:

  • one white male over 16: Jeremiah
  • one white male under 16: son Jeremiah
  • one white female over 16: wife Patience
  • one white female under 16: daughter Betsey or Elizabeth

Betsey was a nickname for Elizabeth, so it would be strange for Jeremiah to give two daughters these names at the same time. It seem reasonable that the first died young and the second was named in her honor. This is supported by the censuses data, which shows only one daughter alive by 1774.
