Biography

Fatima Patience Cheney Blanchard was born on October 9, 1777, in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, her father, Nathan, was 23, and her mother, Levina, was 18.^[1][2][3][4] She married Amasa Blanchard on October 10, 1797, in her hometown.^[5][6] They had three children during their marriage. She died on February 9, 1815, in Brookfield, Massachusetts, at the age of 37, and was buried there.^[7]

"Family archives tell us that Amasa was born in 1771, the son of William and Prudence Shumway Blanchard. He was just two when his parents moved to Brookfield from Sturbridge. He purchased land just prior to his marriage to Fatima Cheney of Sturbridge in 1797. The first of their three sons, Dexter, was born the following year, followed by William in 1800 and Albert Cheney in 1808. Fatima died in February 1815 due to “lock jaw from a bruise on her leg” according to records. Two poignant entries in the daybook note a $2 credit to Amasa Howe, “by digging one grave for Mrs. Blanchard” and to Martin Twitchell, $1.50, “buy one plate for coffin”. Although his youngest child was only seven it appears Amasa never remarried."^[8]
