Biography
Martha lived in Brunswick County, Virginia
Martha was born about 1831. The 1850 US Census records 19 year-old Martha in the home of her parents, Thomas and Louisa Cheely, in Brunswick County, Virginia.[1]
She married John James Cheely on December 12, 1856. [2] She and John had two sons, William[3] and Jefferson Davis.[4] Her husband died during the Civil War.[5]
In April of 1888, Martha applied for a widow's pension based on her husband's service during the Civil War. She had never remarried. Her application was made in Brunswick, Virginia.[6]
The 1900 US Census finds Martha living with her son, Jefferson Davis Cheely, in Sturgeon District, Brunswick, Virginia.[7]
