Francois Chauvin/Chovin was born in 1766 on the North East Coast of Detroit. He was the son of Noel Chauvin and Jeanne Meloche.
Francois married Abigail King. They had five known children. There are baptismal records in the Drouin Collection for Jean Baptiste and Elizabeth. Jane's birth is in Denissen's Genealogy of the French families of the Detroit River region, Francis and Charles appear in the probate records of Francois.
"No. 33 Francois Chovin 232.82 Acres", along the Rouge River, is shown on an 1810 map, "Plan of private claims in Michigan Territory" based on the work of Aaron Greeley, surveyor. Bureau of Land Management records include a certificate for this claim from 1812, although it had to be clarified with an additional certificate in 1914. There is also a detail map of Francois' property in his probate records, surveyed in 1837 as a result of his son John's petition for division of the land.
Francois passed away in 1824.
