Biography
Jean Baptiste Chauvin / John Chovin was born 1 December 1813 and baptized 19 April 1814 in the parish of Sainte-Anne, Detroit, Wayne, Michigan. He was the son of Francois Chauvin/Chovin and Abigail King.
John's father Francois died in 1824, when John and his siblings were minors. In 1837, John petitioned for the partitioning of his father's land on the Rouge River.
John married Clarissa Mariah Maples. They had about six children.
The petition of William Thornton (Clarissa's second husband) in John's probate records state that John's death occurred in 1844, although his probate records are dated 1848:
"...on or about the Second day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-four at Greenfield in the County of Wayne the said John Chovin died intestate..."
