Samuel Newton Chapman was born on January 28, 1837 in Taliaferro County, Georgia. He was the son of John Hart Chapman and Rachel Colclough.[1] Samuel grew up in Taliaferro County and graduated from Penfield College, where he studied to be a teacher. He first taught in Heard County, Georgia. This is where he met his first wife, Mary Emma Boone, who was one of his students. He married Mary Emma on November 22, 1859 in Heard County. They went on to have 12 children together.[2][3] Samuel Newton and Mary Emma were living in Warren County, Georgia in the 1860 census[4]
Samuel's Civil War service began on March 4, 1862 when he enlisted in Company D, 49th Regiment Georgia Infantry. He was discharged on September 29, 1863 due to an injury to his left arm that he received during the Battle of Seven Pines. [5]
After the war, Samuel returned to teaching, first in Crawfordville, and then he became a principal at the school in Powelton. He served as a principal at this school for 41 years, retiring in 1908. He also served on the Hancock County Board of Education and was a member of the Georgia Legislature.[6]
His wife Mary Emma died on March 25, 1898. He married his second wife, Catherine Farmer in December 1899 in Crawfordville, Taliaferro, Georgia. No children were born from this marriage. They appear together in the 1900 and 1910 census in Powelton, Hancock, Georgia[7][8][9]
Samuel died on April 20, 1910 in Powelton, Hancock, Georgia. He is buried in the Powelton Community Cemetery, Hancock County, Georgia.[10]
On May 5, 1911, a little over a year after his death, a new public school in Powelton was dedicated and was named in honor of Samuel (S.N. Chapman Public School). This school was said to be the most modern school in the state of Georgia. The article in the Augusta Chronicle about the school described it as "constructed on bungalow style, contains eight rooms, eight acres of land for poetry yard, flower and vegetable garden, will have a cannery and kitchen connected with the school" (p.1).
