Biography
William was a Friend (Quaker)
William Chandlee came from England with Cromwell's army around 1653 and supervised the English army's stores in County Meath. He was "convinced of ye blessed truth" around the same year and suffered for his beliefs for the rest of his life. In 1666, he was prosecuted for refusing to pay tithes and was imprisoned in the gaol in Trim for two years and five months.
William farmed for many years in Kilnagross, County Meath. He died, aged 103, on 14 March 1695 in his son William's house in Kilmore.
Research Notes
The family list states that he came into Ireland in the year after "Black Monday", a term which has been used to refer to a number of different events in Irish history. The particular Black Monday referred to here may possibly be the solar eclipse of Monday, March 29, 1652.[1] This fits well with our estimated arrival date of 1653.
Edward Chandlee claims that William had three children: William, Susanna and Joseph.
