Biography

William Caswell was born in Screven County, Georgia about 1791, son of James Alexander Caswell and Eleanor Williams. William left Screven County in the early 1820's and settled in what became Decatur County in 1823. He was elected captain of militia for the district for a few years, as early tax digests designated it as Caswell's Militia District.

William speculated in land to a small extent, buying and selling various plats primarily in the 21st District of Decatur County.

In 1830 he is no more than 30 years old, and has a household with three daughters under ten, a wife no more than thirty and one female fifty to sixty.

He lived three households away from Hilliard and Rebecca Emanuel in 1840. At that time he had three boys under ten, three girls under ten,three girls 10-15 and one female under forty.

William's first wife died before 1847 when William married Susan Yarborough.^[1] William was appointed guardian of Francis and Eliza Yarborough, orphans of Joseph Yarborough on 10 January 1848.^[2]. William died in February, 1850 as noted on the mortality index of that year.^[3] His widow is living alone in 1850.^[4] There is a Mrs. Caswell, aged 60 residing in the home of Jesse and Dorcas Thursby in 1860, Decatur County. Dorcas is listed as a Lawrence, so unless it is a second marriage, she may not be a daughter.
