Giuseppe Castro is born on 17 March 1845 and baptized the next day, named after his paternal grandfather. He is the son of Gaetano Castro and Mattea Vaccaro. His godparents are Antonio Birtone and his paternal aunt Vittoria Castro, a married couple.[1][2]
Giuseppe marries Maria Vernagallo on 22 September 1879. This record includes a dispensation due to consanguinity.[3] They are first cousins once removed, a third degree of relation. Giuseppe's godparents are Maria's maternal grandparents.
Giuseppe and Maria have at least ten children together: two daughters named Mattea (1880[4] and 1881[5]), four sons named Vincenzo (1885[6], c. 1890, 1895[7], and 1896), two daughters named Antonina (1886[8] and 1888[9]), two daughters named Vincenza (c. 1891 and c. 1894), and Salvatore (1893).
The first girl named Mattea dies on 30 May 1880 at eight days of age. [10]
The first son named Vincenzo, after his maternal grandfather, dies at one year and five months of age on 19 June 1886.[11]
The first girl named Antonina dies at ten months of age (b. 7 November 1886) on 25 August 1887.[12]
The second son named Vincenzo dies at eight days of age (b. 16 Jan) on 24 January 1890.[13]
Salvatore dies at two months of age (b. Aug 1893) on 3 October 1893.[14]
The first daughter named Vincenza is known from the record of her death at age three (b. 1891) on 25 January 1894.[15]
The third son named Vincenzo is born and baptized 8 April 1895. His godmother is Maria's mother Antonina Birtone, widow of Vincenzo Vernagallo. He is presumed to have died before his brother is born in August 1896.
The second daughter named Vincenza is known from the record of her death in infancy on 10 April 1895, two days after her brother is born. This record gives her age as two years old.[16]
