Willm. Castley and Jane Kitchinge were married at Crosby Ravensworth, Westmorland, England on 15 July 1633.[2] This is the first Castley entry in the Crosby Ravensworth register which has baptisms and burials from 1568 and marriages from 1569.

The following children were baptised at Crosby Ravensworth.

  • Agnes 17 Aug 1634 [3]
  • William 25 Sep 1636 [4]
  • Issabell 31 Mar 1639 [5]
  • Elsabeth 14 Nov 1641[6]

A son James was born about 1643.

Willm Castley of the Scarre was buried at Shap, Westmorland, England on 1 Sep 1671.[7]

Transcript of the will of William Castley

In the name of god Amen I William Castley of Reagill Scarr, sick in body but yet being perfect in memory and remembrance praised be god for the same, I doe make and ordaine this my last will and testament in manner and forme following. First I bequeath my soule into the hands of almighty god my maker hoping that through the meritorious death and passion of Jesus Christ my only saviour and redeemer to receive free pardon for my sins; and as for my body to be buried in cristean burial in the church yard of Shapp. In primis, I give to William Castley my elder son ten shillings and sixe pence. Item I give to Annas Watson ten shillings and sixe pence; and all the rest of my goods moveable and unmoveable whatsoever I give to James Castley Isabell Castley Elizabeth Castley, but my wife thirds. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand the 17 day of July 1671. Witnesses Henry Lowes and John Docker. (Transcribed by Russell Castley April 1992.) The inventory totalled £76/16/8 and the debts owing totalled £7/9/-.[8]

Research note

William asked to be buried at Shapp in his will, so that was presumably his 'home town'. I have no proof that 'William of the Scarre' was the son of Thomas, he is just the most likely. Gawin Castley had a son Wm in 1596, but he died 1596/7. Rych Castley of Hulsmore's son Wm was born Oct 1599, however a child of his was buried Dec 1599 . Robert Castley of Shap had a son Wm born in 1576 - unlikely but possible.
