Biography

Tho: Castley son to Tho: of Rosegill was baptised at Shap, Westmorland, England on 20 Jun 1669.[1]

In 1694 Thomas Castley heir to Thomas his father of 19/1 ob (halfpenny) viz 18/1 plus 1/- ob rental of land acquired from Ed Smith John Stewardson & Richard Stewardson dated 2 Feb 1660.[2]

Thos Castlehow married Jane Lowther on 11 Nov 1697 at St Andrew’s, Penrith, Cumberland, England[3] They married by licence, Jane was of Barrowdale in the barony of Kendal. Thomas Castlehow of Rosegill (Shap register Abstracts). Thomas Castley of Rosegil is in the Shap register as marrying Dec 1697.[4]

In 1717 there was a General Fine imposed upon the death of Lord Richard. D/LONS/L Wharton Manors: Rosgill & Wet Sleddale Thomas Castley paid for lands in his tenancy of the yearly rent of nineteen shillings & a penny halfpenny. Fine of £19/2/6 paid 27 Mar 1717. The fine was 20 times the yearly rent. Thomas's rent was the highest (by far) on this page.

Thomas Castley of Rosegill was buried 7 Jan 1747/48 at Shap, Westmorland, England.[5][6]

Tenant of land in Wharton Manors

In 1694, this Thomas Castley was heir to Thomas his father. The rent of his tenancy was nineteen shillings and one penny and one halfpenny (as mentioned previously). This annual rent is the same through several more generations.

In 1748, after Thomas Castley died his son John Castley was admitted tenant to lands in Wharton Manors, Rosgill. "That at this Court came John Castley oldest son and next heir of Thomas Castley late of Rosgill, yeoman, deceased …." “… of the ancient yearly customary Rent of nineteen shillings and one penny two farthings ……. And the said John Castley having paid to the said Lord as a Fine for his admission the sum of eighteen pounds and eighteen shillings, is accordingly as aforesaid admitted Tenant.”

  • 3 cow grasses on the pasture called Town Moor with all appurtenances thereto belonging within the Manor aforesaid [7]
