At the 7 December 1894 birth of Rosa Cascio to Giuseppe Cascio and Angela Grizzaffi, the family is living at #3 via Banditore in Corleone. While ordinarily the father reports a birth for civic records, in this case he is on his sick bed, so Rosina Bonaccorso, age 28, a levatrice (midwife) reports it.[1]
Rosa is baptized 23 December as Rosam. Her godparents are Biagio Cascio and Caterina Morello.[2]
The oral history as told by great uncle Joseph and which he got from Louis, his father, contends that Louis arrived in this country when he was about nine or ten, most likely with his one brother, John, and two sisters, Tilly and Rose, leaving their parents and one sister in Corleone. Once the siblings were settled they sent for their mother to join them in America, but their father had to stay in Sicily in fear that he would not be allowed to pass through Ellis Island’s stringent medical tests. It is not known what specific health problem kept him from passing, but from Joseph's story it seems that his grandmother left before her husband had passed away.
That is not the real story of this family's migration, based on the available records. Rosa's father died in 1899. Angela left for New York in 1901 with four of Rosa's siblings, and lived with her married sister and their children. Rosa and her younger brother joined them in 1903, accompanied by their maternal uncle and a cousin.
In 1903, Angela Grizzaffi is living in New York with Gioachino Crescimanno, her brother-in-law. Leoluca Grizzaffi, 43, and Biagia Grizzaffi, 11, travel on the SS Nord-America with Rosa, 8, and her brother, Giovanni, 6. Biagia and Rosa both have conjunctivitis when they arrive. On the manifest, Leoluca and Biagia report they are joining Giocchino, Leoluca's nephew, and that Rosa and Giovanni are joining their mother. Both addresses, though hard to read, start with "1460" and are in New York.[3]

In the 1920 census, Tillie and Leoluca have married and moved out, and nephew John Grizzaffi is replaced with cousins Charlie and Philip Grizzaffi.[5] Gina Spatafora, a descendant of Giovanni, suggests the nephews living with Angelina are likely Francesca Cascio's sons Giovanni, Carmelo and Filippo.[6]
